Many consumers looking for credit cards on websites like Yahoo answers, and wiki answers always seem to ask the question where to apply for credit cards?
When trying to decide where to apply for credit cards, keep in mind for what you are looking for. Here's the top 5 list, of what you should think about before applying for a credit card.
1. Be aware of what your credit score is. If you have a low credit score, applying for the majority of credit cards, is only going to leave you with inquiries on your credit report, and a lower credit score, due to recent inquiries. Score is lower than 680, usually won't get you approved with the major credit cards.
2. Find a credit card that you can maximize your rewards with. If you want to save money on groceries, gas purchases, Bill pays, and more, than a cash back credit card might be for you. If you are a frequent flyer, or a traveler who likes to stay at a specific hotel, been an airline miles credit card, or a hotel rewards credit card would work for you.
3. Always read the fine print. Many credit cards will offer a intro teaser rate, like a 0% intro APR for 12 months, or no annual fee for the first year. Make sure that you're aware of what the interest rate will be after that intro period expires.
4. This is an obvious one, but never spend more than what you can pay off in a month. Credit card companies do not charge interest for the first 30 days on the balance of the ending billing cycle. Therefore you don't pay any interest, and that initial 30 days, but after the 30 days are out, you start paying interest. This can offset any cashback, or rewards that you may earn. Also, interest is just a dirty word anyways.
5. Do not close a credit card account that you do not use. Your credit score is based on how much credit you use, versus how much credit you have in total. If you close a credit card that has a $5,000 limit, you lower your total credit, which will also raise your debt to credit ratio. This, in turn, will lower your credit score.
